Johnny Lujack completed 17 of 27 passes for 267 yards (2 TD; 2 INT). Julie Rykovich had 3 catches for 72 yards and a score. Lujack hit George Gulyanics with a 2-yard toss for the go-ahead and game-winning score with 3:23 left on the clock. For the game, the Bears pounded out 146 ground yards on 36 rushing attempts.

For the Cardinals’ defense, Vince Banonis returned an interception 35 yards for a first-quarter touchdown, and Bob Nussbaumer intercepted 3 passes on the day. The Cards’ Jim Hardy and Paul Chistman combined to complete 14 of 38 pass attempts for 158 yards. The Cardinals’ receivers spread the wealth, with 7 players catching passes in the game.

The Cards finish the season a disappointing 4-8. The Bears finish at 9-2-1, first in the NFL West and headed for the league championship game against the 10-2 Eagles, winners of the East.

Detroit Lions 21, Green Bay Packers 17

The Packers’ fourth-quarter rally falls short. Jug Girard completed 9 of 20 passes for Green Bay, for 169 yards and a TD. Tony Canadeo was held to 36 yards on 14 rush attempts.

For the Lions, Bill Dudley carried the ball 18 times for 75 yards. QB Fred Enke was 13 of 23 passing for 141 yards and 2 TDs (1 INT). The third Detroit TD came from Wally Triplett, on a 67-yard punt return in the second quarter.

Detroit ends the year 5-6-1. Green Bay finishes at 5-7.

Norm Van Brocklin started in place of Bob Waterfield, who was nursing a sore shoulder, and, boy, did he make the most of it. Van Brocklin completed 22 of his 31 pass attempts for 401 yards and 5 touchdowns. Tom Fears caught 9 of those passes for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns. Elroy Hirsch had 6 receptions for 96 yards, while Bob Shaw caught 2 for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns, one a 71-yard gallop. Los Angeles’s Dick Hoerner ran 10 times and picked up a total of 46 yards; Tank Younger had 8 carries for 35 yards. For New York, Bobby Layne completed 18 of 34 passes for 181 yards (2 interceptions). Phil Slosburg carried the ball 12 times for 62 yards and a touchdown.The Rams are now 7-3. The Bulldogs fall to 0-9-1.

Playing this game and looking at the stat sheet afterward, it seems no one shone in a ho hum affair. Maybe that’s why the game MVP award went to a punter/return man on the losing team, Chicago’s Red Cochran. The big names on both teams — the Packers’ Tony Canadeo, Jug Girard, and Ted Cook; the Cardinals’ Charlie Trippi, Elmer Angsman, and Pat Harder — all had so-so performances. The biggest point of interest perhaps is that the surprising 5-5 Packers have now run their win streak to 3 while stopping a Cardinals team that appeared to be pulling things together. Chicago falls to 4-6.
